Brad Starks is a fashion, lifestyle and beauty photographer and visual content creator based in Hawaii. Brad uses Shake to quickly and efficiently get freelance agreements sent over to potential clients, helping him win out over competitors who rely on old technology to lock down jobs.
HOW DO YOU USE SHAKE?
With the photography and filmmaking work I do, I’m always on the go and I can get booked for my next job while shooting a current assignment. I got a business call from a new client while at a remote location three weeks ago.
They had seen my work before and wanted to chat about a big last minute project coming up in Hawaii. During the first 5 minutes of the conversation I was informed that I was one of 8 other creatives up for the job. I would need to submit numbers and details on usage of all images and video to be created quickly in order to be awarded the job.
My computer battery was down to 4% and I knew it would die on me before I could get the estimate written up, proof read, and sent out. While I had them on speakerphone, I opened Shake and began an estimate using the template.
I jotted down other extensive details they had for me using my iPhone “Notes” function. After completing the call, I finalized the estimate and emailed the PDF. This took me less than 25 minutes! One hour later, I got a confirmation email with the signed contract on my biggest shoot ever for Relativity Media Film Studio! Shake helped me get that job!
HOW DID YOU HANDLE YOUR CONTRACTING NEEDS BEFORE DISCOVERING SHAKE?
Before using Shake, I had to find any free PDF file online that had some of the elements of what I needed and then I would have to chop it up and customize it to the job I got hired to shoot. The entire process was painful! It took me at least 1-2 hours depending on what was needed and I would make huge mistakes in the legal language in the document every time. Adding details of special usage needs by the client also took additional time. I became a photographer because I love dealing with people, not paperwork! I’m not the fastest typist in the world and there is no worse feeling than hearing the gig was given out to the person that got their numbers and info to the client before you.
WHAT KIND OF IMPACT HAS SHAKE HAD ON YOUR PRODUCTIVITY LEVEL?
As a freelance visual artist, I get my work based on being able to make personal connections with people and then create stunning visuals for my clients. Drafting customized comprehensive contracts is very important but impossible to do quickly with all the numbers and legal terms while figuring out how to best produce what my client needs. Shake keeps me organized and I can concentrate on doing what I love: Making photographs and moving images for my clients. Since using Shake I feel like James Bond 2.0! Structuring an estimate and detail oriented agreements is fun, elegant and pretty damn sexy! (Yikes! Did I just say that?)
TO WHOM WOULD YOU RECOMMEND SHAKE?
As I get hired by other freelance creatives, I know many of them experience the same problems with invoicing and drawing up contracts on the fly. Anytime I know it could make the difference in someone’s productivity, I pass on the link to the app and tell them how it’s helped me. On average I get a thank you text / email back within 2 weeks on how great it’s worked out for them. I wish I had this app on my phone 15 or 20 years ago!
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT SHAKE?
The people that made this app really understand the creative mindset that would use this in the fast-paced and ever changing landscape freelancers live in. Shake takes out all the work in organizing a contract, estimate, or invoice. The work I get is not always the same and my contracts need to reflect new details and unique client needs. The Shake app allows me the flexibility to draft up new agreements quickly and it fills in the blanks to protect my “bottom line.” Being able to do this from any location with my iPhone or tablet is THE BOMB! Shake has become standard for me and will be for a long time to come.
